Devon Trip. Pt 2.
Ok. Where was I? Ahhh yes… I remember now.
Day 2 Clovelly
Clovelly is a quaint and picturesque fishing village built into a cleft of a cliff. It’s beauty is breathtaking. I’m always surprised to find it very warm there. Almost tropical when you compare it to outside of the village.
That was the day I wasn’t star mam and I was the one who wore ’stupid shoes’. 2 inch high heeled brown leather ankle boots are not what you want on your feet when you are walking down (or up) a steep cobbled hill!
Despite the stupid footwear I still managed to make it down to the harbour, to feast on cray fish tails, crab and welks. ( I had a bit of a tummy ache later I can tell you!)
The village of Clovelly is said to have been the inspiration for The Water Babies, written by Charles Kingsley.
Lovely isn’t it!
I never managed to get all the way to the waterfall. I let my two travellers go ahead without me.
I did however, manage to get tired, emotional and a little less elegant than ever whilst making my way down to the harbour!
(Stupid shoes 0 – Pebbly Beach 1)
The Donkeys that live in the village all work very hard. They are used to get goods back up the hills after they have been taken down on sledges… (snow optional…sledges still work!)
“Hey! Share your bucket you grumpy donkey!”
After Clovelly it was off to Bude, a lovely seaside town famous for it’s surfing! The waves are certainly high enough!
Dusk… still time for a visit though and this time it was off to Tintagel! Famous for King Arthur, his round table and Merlin! Andrea caught up with Merlin and had a chat…
A funny chap that Merlin!
That was Day 2!
I think I have left the best til last so you have Part 3 and Day three to look forward to! That was Dartmoor Day!
LOOK! Sensible shoes!

I wouldn’t have guessed tropical temperatures, either! The town looks very cute indeed. That seafood meal sounds great — tummy-ache not so great, but you apparently survived because there you are with sensible shoes and ready for Day Three! Bude’s seaside scenes are very picturesque.

Sensible shoes! See! I love my boots but comfy walking shoes are the best! I may have been exagerating slightly but it’s England. 1 above freezing is tropical! ;o)

Sensible shoes are the best! I never wear anything else!! I only own three pair, one pair of flip flops for summer, one running shoes and one boots for the winter! All sensible!
I just love these pictures. If anything makes me want to go back it’s pics like these. I really miss being by the sea, lakes are nice but they just don’t do it for me…
November 6, 2009 at 7:38 pm
I think I would like to only own three pair but my brain won’t let me. I’m not crazy about shoes… Immelda whatsherface I am not but I reckon I have about 20 pairs… I prefer boots. My dad bought me a pair for Christmas last year and I have just had them repaired! So pleased I still have them… I walk a bit funny and so one shoe usually wares quicker than the other. I’m glad the pics make you yearn for the nice places in life.

I haven’t visited these places for years, and I’m so enjoying the trip down memory lane. I’m totally with you on sensible shoes!
Looking forward to the next part of your trip.
November 6, 2009 at 7:38 pm
I’m a bit of a regular at some of places! ;o) Hope you are ok… your trip is way better than mine! x

Love that picture of you hun. YOu look very relaxed. x
November 6, 2009 at 7:39 pm
Thanks hun… I thought I looked a bit grumpy but the sun was shining in my eye! You ok?
November 4, 2009 at 6:10 pm
How nice to hear from you! Course I remember you
)
I’m so jealous… need a holiday SO badly. I’ve never visited cornwall, it looks SO beautiful… enjoy xxx
November 6, 2009 at 7:40 pm
Phew! I’m glad you do! I was desperate for the break even though it was just a few days, still worth it. Keep in touch!
November 4, 2009 at 8:19 pm
Great photos! I love seaside towns…even the ones here have a little different feel to them than other places.
I really like that picture of you and Andrea together on the beach…two of a kind.
November 6, 2009 at 7:41 pm
I won’t tell Andy what you said although I think she prefers to be told she is like me more than she likes to hear how much she looks like my grandma! hehe

So pretty, I love the scene with the houses all willy nilly on the hill down to the water. And the donkeys, so cute in spite of themselves. Poor baby with your silly shoes. Once we went to Busch Gardens and one of our sons had “sensible shoes” but they had gotten too small – and had no give at all – he was so miserable with his aching feet!
November 6, 2009 at 7:42 pm
I made a point of making sure I high-lighted all the other stupid-shoe-wearers… So I didn’t feel daft on my own! The donkeys are so sweet. As we left we saw about ten of them frolicking in a big field! Cute.

Beautiful! That harbor is breathtaking. Looking forward to pt. 3 – almost like being there.
November 6, 2009 at 7:43 pm
I wish I could have taken you with me! That would have been a blast!
November 5, 2009 at 4:43 am
Gee, another place I would like to see if I get to England. I will have to be nice to my lady friend and traveling companion. My list is so long now I may have to come more than once.
November 6, 2009 at 7:44 pm
That’s the plan! Thankfully England is only small… in comparison to other countries. You’d need more than a day though! Your lady friend would surely choose the perfect places for you to see!
November 5, 2009 at 6:48 am
Wow! What a lovely time you are having. I can imagine just where you are, because, believe it or not, in my living room, I have two photos we took ~ one of a view through an arch at Tintagel and one of the harbour in Clovelly. Glad to see you wore sensible shoes the next day. Looking forward to more!
November 6, 2009 at 7:45 pm
Aw glo that’s really nice! I have a couple of the photos I took enlarged and I’m going to put them in frames and hang them on the staircase…if it’s ever finished!
November 5, 2009 at 10:15 am
Ah … Clovelly … its years since I was there … and I used to go to school in North Devon….
I’ve bumped into you on a couple of blogs incidentally … must be following you around!
November 6, 2009 at 7:46 pm
Hello there! Thanks so much for the visit. I think I know you from Carols place. (she’s so lovely) I saw the pics of your big lad! Handsome! Hope he had a wonderful birthday.
November 5, 2009 at 1:55 pm
Here I am at last…looking just a little bit sheepish!
This all brings back many happy memories of my visits to these places, even if most of them were made in somewhat inclement weather!
I’m wagging my finger at you about the silly shoes, especially for Clovelly of all places! xx
November 6, 2009 at 7:47 pm
hey little lamb! ;o) The weather can be a bit off. If you hit good weather then you are very lucky! I didn’t have high expectations in October!
Shoes! I know! *hangs head*
xx

That first pic, especially, makes me wish I could visit in person, but this will have to do.
November 6, 2009 at 7:48 pm
You are welcome to oggle my beautiful pics whenever you like!
November 5, 2009 at 7:56 pm
That is definitely a lovely-looking village! My mom would be beside herself if she visited that place.
November 6, 2009 at 7:48 pm
I love that phrase! Beside herself. It makes me smile! I’m sure she would. It was my mums favourite place, along with my conservatory! x
November 6, 2009 at 12:24 am
You know that fishing village is what I imagine the fishing village in Dickens’ David Copperfield would have looked like.
Seems like such a fun trip (that’s my nice way of saying I’m jealous)
November 6, 2009 at 7:49 pm
And so you should be jealous! It was fabby, fantastic, wonderful, great, wonderful… ;o) (I’ve ran out of words!)
Super!
November 7, 2009 at 1:29 pm
This is so picturesque. I love it.
And sensible shoes are a good thing.
November 8, 2009 at 1:22 pm
I remember being ambushed by a flock of seagulls at Tintagel. They were after my huge Cornish Pasty! We’ve visited Bude too, but not Clovelly. With your sore feet you could have done with that donkey. It’s a shame he was at lunch! x
