Alive & Kicking…
Well, ok then, perhaps not kicking but shuffling around his little cage as happy as a sand boy… (What is a sand boy and what makes them so happy?)
Anyhoo, Bruce is the last remaining non-human member of the daffy household, and at almost three years old, well, you have to be realistic. He’s slowed down an awful lot over recent weeks and I think he may have suffered a slight stroke but he came back quite strong and is pretty much holding his own and enjoying his days.
I just wanted to share him with you all.
MEET BRUCE – (Named after Mr Springsteen)
Sweet and lovely, cuddly and cute, handsome in his own tatty way… Bruce, the cutest little guy around.

Hi, This from world wide words.
[A] Let me add an explanatory note to your question, as American readers have probably never heard this saying. It is mostly known in Britain and the Commonwealth, though it is not so common these days even in those countries. The first examples we know about are from London at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Another form current at the time was as jolly as a sandboy. Both are proverbial sayings that suggest a carefree and untroubled state of mind.

He’s a charmer!

I had recent good news about one of my animals. My red sow with the litter of twelve piglets went off her feed and water for three days and just lay in her pen. i was considering butchering her before she died so as not to lose the meat.
This morning she took some waters, stood up, ate some feed and spent a little time rooting around outside in the snow. Maybe her litter sleeping with her keeping her warm encourage her to rally.
My only explanation is that she got poisoned with something.
I am glad to have her back. Your furry friend would be quickly eaten, without even being noticed by my sow. Nasty thought!
It looks like my other sow has had a miraculous conception. The math does not work out. I may blog about it when she has the litter.

So three is rather old for little fuzzy Bruce, huh? Well, he looks pretty happy and I wish him well!

Ha I love that expression and it’s certainly one I’m very familiar with, although I must confess I don’t hear it used so much lately. Maybe there’s not a lot to feel happy about at the moment!
Bruce is a cute little chap.

Awww, Bruce is a cutie! (And I had never heard the sandboy expression, so thanks to those who posted explanations!)
November 24, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Bruce is definitely cute. I’d like something like that, but we keep cats and they’d certainly like something like that – sealed in a glass box or not.
November 24, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Aw bruce is well cute. Well done you.
Hey have you been getting my emails hun?. x

Aw, Bruce! What a sweetie pie. Little pets like that don’t have a long life span, but they can still add a lot to the family. I’m glad he’s feeling better.

Hi Bruce
Well, this brought memories back of the hamster my brother and I had when we were kids. When its cheeks became hugely fat, I ran running to my mother saying that there was something wrong with the hamster…she looked at it and said, “Must be mumps!” That’s my only memory of it ~ I hope we were relieved when we came to understand it was just its amazing expandable cheeks to transport food! Interesting name for a hamster ~ how did he get the name Bruce??
November 25, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Oh, yes, I’ve remembered something else ~ when my mother diagnosed the hamster with “mumps”, she told us not to get too close ~ LOL Makes me laugh thinking about it.

Thanks everyone, for taking the time to oggle at sweet old Bruce. He is so lovely but a bit grumpy tonight… he reminds me of my dad. Things are just a bit mad at the moment. I’m running about here and there but I just wanted to say thanks for the nice words and the stories. (Glo you made me giggle, it reminded me of the time I took a male hamster to the vets becasue I was worried about the huge lumps on his ‘erm under carriage, only to be told they were his testicles! hehe )
)
So, thanks again, I hope you are all keeping well.
Oh and it’s my boys 18th Birthday tomorrow! 18! where did the time go! He’s soooooo handsome and amazing and I am very proud of both of my children but I’m also proud that I have a smart, witty, clever 18 year old son!
November 26, 2008 at 5:14 am
LOL Daffy ~ Oops, I asked where Bruce’s name came from and obviously when I read Mr. Springsteen it didn’t stick in my head. Duh! I must have got too close to the mumps ~ should have listened to my mother!

Awww, cute little Bruce. In this pic I can tell he’s a hamster and not a ferret. My sis and I used to have hamsters when we were kids. She had a lovely, white one named Snowball that was our particular favorite. One time my hubby and I “babysat” some gerbils and somehow they got loose. We heard a racket in the night, and flipped on the light just in time to see 2 gerbils streak under the door and then a huge cat paw sweeping around trying to catch them! Exciting stuff.
A very, very Happy Birthday to your grown-uppish son! My oldest just called and invited me to lunch, how sweet is that?
November 26, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Very sweet tracie! Mums are cool sometimes…
) I guess you are one of the cool ones!
Oh and my friend Angela… well when we were at school the class used to have a hamster and during school holidays and on weekend we all used to take turns in taking the hamster home and looking after it. It was the turn of Angela and she was so excited. She played with the hamster all the time. Her mum shouted her for tea and Angela quickly put the hamster away and ran in the bathroom to wash her hands. Unfortunatley Angela had not closed the cage door properly and school hamster managed to get out!! Angelas mum marched up the stairs having not gained response from Angela and opened the bedroom door just as school hamster was approaching the same door. *Squish*
I’m not quite sure how Angela explained that one on Monday morning! (I know it might not seem funny but for some reason it does bring a smile!)

I remember crying buckets as a kid when my hamster died, even though it lived to a ripe old age. She was called Win Felice, short for Winifred Felicity! I hope Bruce continues to get around OK after his stroke. x
November 28, 2008 at 1:32 pm
he is a cutie… How long do they live for?
curious because if the day ever comes and LHM wants one…
