Gone Fishin’

It’s Another lovely sunny evening here in the North East! Let’s hope it carries on through until tomorrow when my daughter is going fishing for the first time.

Her enthusiasm is bubbling over.

She has counted her reels and her floats, she’s planned her packed lunch and made me buy her a pot noodle.  Her clothes are all laid out next to her rod and her foldy-up-chair.

I’ve banished the worms to the shed…

She made her dad buy a magic tent that assembles in 10 seconds when you throw it in the air. (Apparently gadgety gimmicks will help them catch fish…)

Her fishing licence (what is it with my kids and licences? ) is folded neatly next to her dads in his ‘fishing wallet’.    Don’t laugh… everything they need for the day is hyphenated with the word ‘fishing’.

Fishing-coat, fishing-bag, fishing-shoes… you get the idea. Oh and the fishing-cooler box!

Lets hope the fish bite,

Pray it doesn’t hail.

Let’s hope it’s alright,

I bet she gets a whale!

May her tales be many of the ‘one that got away’. And then the surpise of all – the one she caught that day!!!

For into the pan – it will be that night – enjoyed by all – with all knives and forks in sight.

Hope she has a great day…

  2. daffy Says:

I’m sure I’ll hear more than one tale of ‘the one that got away!’
My husband is the king of those…
    “I had a bite… it was huge…just lost it though…”
Thanks Peter. I think they will have a great time.

  3. Anvilcloud Says:

I will be interested to hear how long her patience with fishing lasts.

  4. Peter Says:

I can see you on twitter – but cannot leave a comment???

  5. daffy Says:

AC – I reckon if she arrives at the spot at 8am she will be bored by 8.15! :o ) We’ll see.
    .
Peter, I have sent you a message but honestly I am the wrong person to ask any technicle questions to! I don’t know how I manage to turn the pc on!

  6. chrisb Says:

Well I hope she has a brilliant time~ and doesn’t get too bored waiting for one to nibble!

  7. Flighty Says:

It’s not something that I’ve ever done but I have certainly heard plenty of(fishy)stories about it over the years. Anyway let’s hope that she enjoys herself and even catches a real whopper!
Have a good day yourself, and enjoy the rest of the long weekend as well! xx

  8. ThomasLB Says:

I’m not much on fishing, but I think I’d enjoy playing with the tent.

  9. Carol Says:

How sweet that her dad is taking her fishing! I’m looking forward to the fish fotos (or at least the stories).

  10. Mas Says:

I often see people fishing when I walk along the canal – occasionally catching things (although, apart from the odd boot, all I’ve seen brought up are tiddlers!!) Good luck to them tomorrow – who knows what they’ll bring back… hopefully something edible … and large enough to feed the family (although, if it’s cooked and covered in batter they maybe have taken a detour on the way back :) )

(a note about twitter – assuming you’ve not worked it out already :) – you can send replies using @username message and you can send “direct messages” by d username message )
have a great bank holiday weekend

Mas – thanks for the tip but twitter has been binned! I’m much too stupid to get to grips with new fangled fangleness.
As for the fishing, well I have a funny feeling that she may strike gold (that would be nice but I think I really mean strike fish!) If she manages to catch one, it will be one more than they usually get so she will be given the honorary (sp?)title of ‘Lucky Mascot’ and the poor kid will be probably be dragged along on every forthcoming fishing trip! ttfn to you too.
    .
Carol I don’t know if I can word this very well but she has the demenour and attitude of a fisher person. She is quiet, laid back, studiuos… I think fishing is right up her street! It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that she wants to go and I think she will take to it like a duck to water. Having said that she is her daddies shadow lately so I have a funny feeling whatever ativity he chose to follow, so would she. :o ) Oh, and they have taken the camera! (They are so full of hope!) :o )
    .
Thomas – You just chuck it in the air! It’s like magic. It takes a heck of alot longer than 10 seconds to roll it all back up again but well worth it for the joy of chucking it back into the air again. (I think it’s a case of you and me both here! If I had to go I would nominate myself to be tent lady!)
    .
Hi Flighty – She was up at six this morning, ‘loading her reel’, checking that I made the right kind of sandwiches and packing her (fishing-)foldy chair and (fishing-)green umbrella. Of course she has also packed her (fihing-)book, (fishing-)MP3 player, (fishing-)Nintendo DS and (fishing-)gameboy too! :o )
It’s just George and I today so I think we will find a nice pub to lunch in.xx
    .
Hi Chris – I think between, eating, playing and tent errecting we might just keep her occupied for the day! A fish would be a bonus! :o )

  12. irishpisky Says:

Sounds like my Daughter. But just imagine the look on her face when she has to take a fish off the hook and actually KILL it. She might just not be so brave then!

  13. Glo Says:

I guess they are back by now ~ I think it’s terrific that the two of them went off together to enjoy themselves in the fresh (fishing)air with a flying (fishing) tent. She sounds like she was ready for any possibility ~ and I love the photo of their hats together :)

Hope you enjoyed your day as well, Daffy.

  14. daffy Says:

IP- That is when the boys come in handy! Have a look at that face of triumph now! (Just recieved a text/pic from the fishers!)
Hope you have a great Saturday! It’s looking a bit overcast here… hope it moves over! :o )
    .
No Glo, left at 6am this morning and it’s 10am here now and they will be away all day! I’ve just added an edit and as you can see we have a triumphant fisherwoman in our midst!
She’s with her Uncle too, (dads borther) and the three up them are possible the original ‘Three Amigos!’ :o )
Me? I’m going to pick up my dad and we are going for a leisurely root around the shops before hitting then somewhere for a spot of lunch! Hope you have a great day too! x

  15. Peter Says:

Wow, just saw the ‘Update’ and to think I was going to buy that in Morrisons too

Only joking – well done – amazing – looks like she is going to be a talented ‘Angler’

Just get the knife and fork – ready …

  16. Cuppa Says:

My goodness. That is quite a catch.
Who took it off the hook?

  17. whoa! that is some catch!!! the tent sounds like fun and it also sounds like you had some ‘alone time’ this weekend.

i used to love fishing (and crabbing) when i was a kid. i was a real champ–nothing about fishing grossed me out. i could hack up bait (squid), take fish off the hook, etc.

after 15 years of not fishing, i recently tried my hand at it with my mom at her house in florida and we were both screaming when we caught a fish and she had to run in the house and get plastic gloves so we could hold the fish to get him off the hook.

pathetic, i know. have a great weekend!!!

  18. thedailydish Says:

YAY!! Your daughter is ADORABLE Daff and I couldn’t be prouder. GREAT JOB!!! Your husband must be tickled to bits. PS: I see you sneaked in a poem. :) PPS: You are entered in for the Free necklace – you don’t need to reciprocate (I don’t even drink coffee!) LOL

    Have a wonderful weekend :)

  19. daffy Says:

Hi Christy! That’s how I felt, look at her little smile!
I did sneak a poem in, it was after I read PI’s(or curlys’?) post on Angsty rebellion, I felt the urge!
No,no, don’t worry, I’ll get creative… it might not be worth having but I’ll give it a go… I’m sure I have the ability to make a scented lavander bar or something! :o ) Thanks Christy! (I do like that necklace!) xx
    .
Curly, that would be me too! Screaming off into the distance. Tonight when they bring it(or all of them!) in the house I will be banished. My husband can’t stand hearing me saying how sad it is and how sorry for the fish I am. :o )
Alone time! Hah! Chance would be a fine thing! I thought my dad and I were going to get some serious chilling out time together but as soon as my son and his girlfriend got wind of us going out to lunch they invited themselves along! We’ve had a great day! Plus to thank me for the meal, my boy is mowing the lawn now and Mel is out filling the bird feeders whilst my dad is like the Lord of the Manor, sitting in the conservatory, telling them both how it should be done! xx
    .
Hi Cuppa! :o ) It’s a big one isn’t it! I think her dad or her uncle would have helped but to be honest she’s not very squimish, she’s just a bit of animal lover and might have demanded they put him back! Hope you are feeling ok! (and little Smudge of course! Oh and not forgetting Grandpa! :o )
    .

Big Eyes! Look at the size of it! Morrisons would put it at the front of the display cabinet! :o )
Yukkkk no way am I eating that! She might want it stuffing and framing! :o )

  20. Will she have to deal with wiggly worms for bait??

  21. Glo Says:

Wow! Congratulations to your daughter! Sorry I got mixed up with the time/day ~ being 8 hours behind, it’s a bit confusing. I’ll be interested to find out if any more fish were caught and when the next trip is planned :) Sounds like you had a busy day too, surrounded with the rest of the family!

  22. daffy Says:

Yes PI but I don’t know whether or not she would have ‘hooked’ them on! They use an array of bait, trying to fathom out what is the fish favourite! :o ) Rather her than me!
    .
No Glo (that rhymes!) don’t be sorry! ;o) I get confused too! They are on their way back now and have caught 8 in total! 4 for Uncle, 2 for dad and 2 for the little angler! I bet she comes back all weather beaten. (having said that it has stayed nice all day!) I think she’ll be up for anothr adventure!
I’ve just got back from taking my dad home. He’s had a good day too and is all ready for a visit to the pub this evening! Bless him! x

  23. Flighty Says:

Wow! Well done Lil’F, that is fantastic! xx

  24. laura b. Says:

Success! I have never even gone fishing…I have no idea how I have missed this particular activity.

  25. Peter Says:

I guess the ‘men folk’ will be drowning their sorrows in a pint – tonight….

Whilst your daughter can justify – her status as the ‘One and Only’

  26. Mas Says:

Wow. Looks like a successful day had by all; the size of that fish – plenty for everyone (I’d think)

No worries about twitter – I think I remember I had a little head scratching with it before I got everything working how I wanted (you didn’t know about my little head did you :) )

    Catch you later
    hugs
    M

  27. Dawn Says:

That is a big fish. It will feed many people or a couple of teens. It looks like she had a good time. I hope you are feeling less grouchy today. I left a reply comment on yesterday’s post. I tried to email it, but it came back.

  28. chrisb Says:

    Wow that is some fish!

I have tagged you and given you an award at my place, if you are interested.

  29. Philip Says:

    Is mother the fishing filleter?

  30. Louise Says:

What a lovely photo of your daughter, was this her first catch! Every other word in our household is fishing too, but it doesn’t come from me, well only maybe when I say ‘no you can’t go fishing this weekend’! x

  31. Lisa Says:

Lovely fish! I never catch a thing. :)

Happy Bank Holiday weekend. Now I *really* wish I lived in the UK. :)

  32. daffy Says:

Lisa my daughter and I are going shopping! I can’t think of a better way to spend the extra day! She wants to buy the new Mario-Kart (?) game… I’ll no doubt have to play it when we get back. *sighs* It’s a hard life! ;o)
    .
Louise, yes, first ever catch which they plan to eat tomorrow! :o ) I did laugh when you said how you put your foot down! That would never work in this house! :o ) Enjoy today. Garden weather?
    .
Philip I wouldn’t touch the slimey, scaly dead thing with a ten foot pole! Yukkkkk! ;o)
No, they do all that too. I do let them use my sink….that’s as much help as they get off me. :o )
    .
Chris isn’t it! It fills the bottom freezer draw!
Thanks for the award and the tag. I’d like to do the tag so will have a ponder for later. x
    .
Hi Dawn, you are right about it feeding a couple of teens! Where do they put all that food? Hollow legs;o)
Yes, I was only short-term grumpy! all gone now. :o )
    .
Mas – I’ll pass on the fish I think. Her and her dad are going to savour the catch tomorrow! (I’ll have spaghetti!)
    .
haha Peter, I think it was success all round but she landed the big one!
    .
Laura I have never fancied fishing, there is a fine line between fishing and just standing by the river with a stick in the water. I think boredom would get me after three minutes! ;o)
    .
Isn’t it a great fish Flighty! She was so pleased, especially when her dad and uncle were so pleased too. She set the standard. xx

    .
Hi BB – That may have been ‘the one that got away’. :o ) Her fish is nearly a whale… :o )
Hope you had a good birthday! :o )

  34. irishpisky Says:

Son is a great lover of fishing, and we are lucky that I got a photo of his first catch. It was a small fish (but perfectly-formed), and the photo is still one of the nicest i have ever taken of proud Son!

  35. daffy Says:

IP- I understand that. It’s a very proud moment to ‘catch’ an achievement on camera! I think I will look for a nice frame today. While the boys watch the last home game of the season against some small team called Chelsea, ;o) we girls are hitting the Metro centre for some holiday clothes! Nice end to a lovely weekend. (Even better if we beat the said small team!)

  36. mylozmom Says:

Ahhhhhhhhh, how awesome is that! I use to fish with my dad ALL the time! I loved it…..still do!

    Yeah Lil’ Daff!

  37. daffy Says:

Thanks MM, she had a great time. Today though, the fisherwoman turned shopper extrodinaire! We have shopped and now all we want is to drop! :o )

  38. Sounds like me i love going fish well for the first hour anyway lol

  39. Tracie Says:

Oh, how I loved to go fishing with my step-dad! He got me a cane pole because I was too impatient when I used the regular kind and kept winding it up to see if I had a fish yet. So many good memories. I loved to put the worm on the hook, but was afraid to take the fish off!

  40. daffy Says:

Well then you are more brave than I Tracie! I wouldn’t go near a worm. I won’t even let them keep them in the house! As for the fish…… Urghhhhhh! :o ) They do enjoy it though! I guess they have the fisher-person gene! :o )

  41. daffy Says:

Tiffany I took the photo out, I’m a bit dizzy sometimes! (I don’t keep personal photos up for too long) I’ll sort it out for you. :o )

  42. Bob Story Says:

Hi, As you probably know both Sue and I love our (mostly coarse)fishing, for some reason the fish picture you must have shown is not apparent to me but I’m sure it was a monster (Trout?).

  43. daffy Says:

Cheers Bob, Sue. I’ve sent you the picture of the Whale! Enjoy! :o )
